See below for summer course offerings and dates.

 

HQS 6010 Healthcare Quality: landscape, standards, and measurement

This course provides a national perspective on the history and evolution of the US healthcare quality movement and the six

components for high-quality healthcare: safe, timely, effective, equitable, efficient, and patient-centered. Using a mix of local

and national leaders in the field, the complexities of quality and the scientific basis for understanding the measurement of

quality will be explored, including exposure to quality measures from a variety of organizations and measure comparison sites

and the merging of quality outcomes with evolving reimbursement paradigms and models. The association between quality

and safety and healthcare economics, regulation, accreditation, information technology, and population health will be

covered.

Hybrid: week-long intensive course

June10-14 2024. 8:30am- 5pm (Monday and Tuesday are in person with the remainder of the week virtual)

HQS 6060 Applied Clinical Informatics for QI

This 3 or 5-day intensive graduate institute applies core clinical informatics concepts in the context of quality improvement and

patient safety initiatives. Content covered addresses foundational theories, frameworks, and policies of clinical informatics

relevant to quality improvement and patient safety as well as practical application of informatics tools relevant to quality

improvement efforts and local governance structure. Learners will be exposed to a variety of informatics leaders in the field.

Hybrid: week-long intensive course

0.5CU section: June 3, 4, 5 (8:30AM – 5PM)

1.0CU section: June 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 (8:30AM – 5PM)

All days will be in person EXCEPT June 4

HQS 6070 Leadership in Healthcare Quality & Safety (1.0 credit unit)

This six-week course will help develop core skills for emerging leaders of safety and quality in healthcare systems. The

course will include a combination of self-assessments, encounters with exemplary leaders, group exercises, individual

activities and readings that will provide the participants with a range of experiences designed to further student’s own

leadership journey .

Hybrid: In person and Virtual sessions

  • Check your bill and make sure that your fall 2023 and spring 2024 bills are cleared.
  • If you did NOT take a course this current spring 2024 semester and would like to register for the summer, you must complete a Return from Leave Form to activate your student registration status.
  • Are you graduating in the spring but are interested in one of the courses above? Let us know and we can talk about how you can register.

We know that you all have incredibly busy schedules but the information below will help support you as you navigate through your program.

Course Registration:

  • Mark Your Calendars: Regular Spring course registration opens on Wednesday, November 22nd.
    • Log into Path@Penn to register. If you try to register before November 22, you will not be officially registered and your request will not be considered complete.

  • MSHP HQS Concentration fellows will have to request permission to register for HQS courses via Path@Penn.

    • MHQS students now have access to all Capstone II course materials in the student portal to help prepare even if you are not in the final stages of your project or writing at this time.

Tuition Bills:

  • Bills are due each semester that you are registered for.
    • Payment/tuition benefits must be submitted each semester that you receive a bill
    • If you are eligible for tuition benefits, familiarize yourself with the appropriate policy.
    • If you are on a scholarship, follow instructions provided by the Penn CHIPS administrative team each semester.
  • Check your Penn Pay account to ensure that you have not missed a bill

Leave of Absence

  • If you are currently on a leave of absence, please complete this form and communicate with Stacey to access registration for spring 2024. If you did not register and take a course in fall 2023, you will need to return from leave as the University requires students not registered during fall or spring semesters to be put on leave.

NEW: Pennmedicine Email Accounts for CHOP based Students:

  • The University has recently transitioned to new student systems and at this time, CHOP email addresses are not able to be entered as a preferred email address to receive communications directly from the University. Penn CHIPS was recently advised to suggest that students create a pennmed email address and set up email forwarding to their CHOP email (or use both account separately).

NEW: Immunization Requirement:

  • The University of Pennsylvania requires all students to be compliant with these requirements. Failure to meet these requirements will result in denial of student registration privileges. All students must submit their immunization information into their secure Wellness Portal. You can find the requirements and immunization form here.

  • QI Advisor:
    • All students have been or will be assigned a QI Advisor. It is your responsibility as the student to connect with your QI Advisor and determine the best schedule for future meetings for the duration of your program.  
  • Program Advisor:
    • All MHQS students have a program advisor (Jennifer Myers or Kathy Shaw)
    • HQS Certificate and Concentration Students should reach out to Karen Shala with any overall program questions/issues.
